According to Financial Advisor Magazine, the RIA channel has surpassed $70 trillion in registered assets under management in 2017. Furthermore, this translates into a compound annual growth rate of 8.1%.
The growth within the industry can be attributed to managers and advisors leaving their respective companies and bringing new money with them into the RIA space. Not only new money, but registered investment advisors are held to a fiduciary standard where the client’s needs come first, bringing reassurance that their interests are being carefully considered. To be eligible for the Financial Advisor Magazine Ranking, firms must be independent registered investment advisors and file their own ADV with the SEC, and provide financial planning and related services to individual clients. Firms must have at least $50 million in assets under management as of December 31, 2017. Firms complete and submit a survey on their firm’s behalf and each is represented in the final survey ranking. The annual ranking is based in part on the previous year’s assets for discretionary and nondiscretionary assets reported on Form ADV. Corporate RIA firms, investment advisor representatives (IARs) and hybrids are not eligible for this survey.
